She Has Stolen My Friends

Dear Kay,

I’m in year 9 at school, and I have 3 friends, which I normally hang around with. The problem is, that there is this girl in our year that has become really good friends with them. I feel that I am being forced out or left behind. I want to be friends with this girl, but this girl seems to have stolen my friends. What shall I do?

(A DISTRESSED YEAR NINE)

Believe it or not, this is a very Common problem that can arise in the middle years of secondary school. Friends that have been together since junior schools can and normally do grow apart slightly. This is not because of them liking you any less. This is mostly because as you reach the age where you become a teenager your social skills develop. Don’t feel as though this is a battle; don’t fight it, just go with the flow!

One suggestion is that you can have a party, invite your friends and this girl and some other people that you know, and see what happens. You never know, you might surprise everyone, including yourself!
