 Polio Eradication

The Polio Eradication campaign was started by Rotary International in 1985 with the express aim of eradicating Polio from the world. Previously millions of children have died or suffered from the crippling effects of this dreadful disease that can be prevented with  simple vaccination.

In 1985 the disease was endemic in 125 countries of the world, in excess of 350,000 cases per year, a substantial sum of money was raised and this has been applied to this enormous task with considerable success.

Today, throughout the world the battle to eradicate polio continues. For 2009, there were 1588 worldwide cases of polio. This includes 38 cases in Afghanistan, 724 in India, 388  in Nigeria, and 89 in Pakistan, figures correct as of 19th January from the Global Polio Eradication website.

With Polio long eradicated from Great Britain and Ireland , many people mistakenly believe it no longer exists, but this virus knows no boundaries and could spread from an endemic country into a polio free area such as ours. As long as one case remains in the world, no child can be considered completely safe from this deadly crippling disease.

The Rotary Club of Nuneaton is linking up with local schools to involve pupils in a sponsorship scheme whereby the pupil undertakes a small task for a parent, relative or neighbour in return for sponsorship, a £1.00  donation to END POLIO NOW. Rotary has negotiated for the American Gates Foundation (established by Bill Gates of Microsoft ) to contribute an additional £1.78 for every £1.00 raised, making a total of £2.78, enabling each child's contribution to vaccinate FIVE Children in a Polio infected area.

Children's Boot and Shoe Collection

Within Britain many children outgrow footwear long before the actual footwear wears out. These unwanted boots and shoes that are (English) Size 6 and smaller are collected by Nuneaton Rotary Club which supplies them to a charity which operates in the Philippines, where large numbers of children exist by scavenging from landfill sites. Part-worn shoes and boots provide some protection to the feet of these desperately poor children.
