Picture Books
Jude Daly has illustrated three of my picture books
- The Star-Bearer,
The Stone and
Do The Whales Still Sing?
We have a special working
relationship. I like to think
of a current of energy connecting us, even though a wide stretch
of ocean separates us.
As
Jude's artwork develops, so the need for
many of my words falls away. Watching the story come alive under
her brush (all
3 hairs) is a magical process and the first time I see
the
finished artwork, layered between tissue,
I'm mesmerized by their jewel-like quality.
Joan Rankin, illustrator of
Hic... Hic... Hiccups!, has an uncanny knack of interpreting gesture,
character and humour in the fewest of strokes.
Her drawing has
a Quentin Blake-like
simplicity of line. While strong elements of
design,
texture and pattern, reflect her background as
a weaver, and her knowledge
of puppet-making infuses her figures with
‘stuffing’. Joan also creates sheer theatrical magic with shadow puppets, textured paper,
coloured tissue and light
boxes.
