Viva! Dairy Day of Action - Mothers Want Their Babies Back!

On the 1 March, the day before Mother's Day, Viva! aim to confront
consumers with the reality of dairy production. Still many are
ignorant to the suffering of Britain's hardest working mother – the
dairy cow, whose baby will be ripped from her side after just one or
two days. With education comes change. Dumping dairy is the easiest
way to end your association with this cruel industry – and save calves
and mothers from the misery of separation and the horrors of live
exports and the veal industry. Whether you can raise awareness on your
local high street, or can just spare an hour or two to distribute
leaflets, you can help us bring about change.

We have produced a new leaflet Mothers Want Their Babies Back! and
some excellent simple placard style posters carrying the same message.
We also have our ever popular How to be dairy-free recipe guide
available and It's easy to be dairy-free!, the health and shopping
guide. Order your free materials and find out more about the campaign
at www.milkmyths.org.uk.

change. Come and take the next steps forward at the upcoming UK-wide

Advance Notice - mark the date and make plans

Tuesday 3rd June
Food & Climate Action - everyone/everywhere

An opportunity to highlight the message the livestock sector generates
more greenhouse emissions as measured in CO2 equivalent – 18 percent –
than transport.

Details via http://www.veggies.org.uk/climate

We very much hope that everyone to get directly involved with this.
It is a unique opportunity to build links across movements. The
Network for Climate Action is giving direct support to the
vegan/animal rights message. I hope that we can reciprocate.

As vegans, vegetarians or animal rights advocates we are not beyond criticism.
This day may challenge us to think about issues of food miles, cash
crops, food waste, and the power of supermarkets vs fair trade,
seasonal cooking, local & organic growing etc. However by showing a
willingness to engage in the debate we can hope to form valuable
alliances with many other groups, from allotment holders to
humanitarian groups etc.

Climate chaos is the greatest threat to all life on earth. Billions
may die - particularly the animals that are not able to relocate as
their habitats are lost through flood, drought or human encroachment.

Get involved!

Organise free vegan food events, stalls in your town, banner drops,
demos outside supermarkets, blockades of unsustainable food suppliers,
street theatre, think creatively and get involved! And if you can't do
something on the day itself, promote it by doing something on the
Saturday before it.

Please email info@veggies.org.uk to express a general interest in
supporting this day.

Why climate action on food?

Climate chaos is one of the biggest threats we're facing. Climate
chaos will not only affect humanity, but is already leading to the
extinction of species and the collapse of ecosystems all around the
world. To stop runaway climate change we have to drastically reduce
our greenhouse emission within the next ten years.

The kind of food we eat contributes up to a third of our greenhouse
emissions. The livestock sector alone generates 18% of all greenhouse
gases. Changing your diet is one of the easiest ways to cut emissions
yet it's something not many people talk about. To avoid the
devastating effects of climate chaos we can't continue eating food
imported from the other side of the world, nor base our diet on animal
products.

The day of action is called by the Network for Climate Action, a
network of autonomous groups taking action against the root causes of
climate chaos. It coincides with the UN Conference on World Food
Security and the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy from 3rd
to 5th June 2008.

A leaflet promoting this call-out can be printed from

There are less than a dozen circus still (ab)using animals. With your

The decision by a shopping centre's management to allow an animal
circus on its grounds may come back to bite them.

Animal rights campaigners have slammed Brent Cross for permitting
Zippos Circus to hold a series of shows in the area during the
February half-term holidays.

Appeals have appeared on blogging websites asking people to complain
to Brent Cross and boycott the circus, because of the use of horses
and budgies in the acts.

Paul Thomas, campaigns assistant for the Captive Animals' Protection
Society (Caps), said the group had urged the centre not to allow
animal circuses for a number of years.

"They have refused to respond to us and they don't see anything wrong
with using animals, but it is cruel and unnecessary," he said.

"The animals are subjected to large amounts of travelling and
humiliation when they are performing. It's not a form of
entertainment.

"At the end of day, when people have left to go home, the animals
will be locked away in cages."

He called on people to boycott the circus and demonstrate outside it
to persuade others to do the same, encouraging people to choose
"human circuses" instead.

Steve Norman, animal rights spokesman for Barnet Green Party said:
"The shopping centre should not be promoting it and should have their
own business ethics, which should include points against animal
circuses.

"It is an outdated and antiquated form of entertainment."

Martin Burton, proprietor of Zippos Circus, said: "We respect the
right to free speech but everyone should be clear that the number of
people campaigning against animals in circuses are a minority.

"I believe it would be a huge shame to let the opinions of so few
prevent the joy experienced by so many who come to our circus every
year and hope that visitors will be able to enjoy seeing animals
working in our show for generations to come."

Brent Cross has backed its decision to permit the shows, saying that
Zippos had an "exceptional" animal rights record.

Norman Black, head of marketing at the shopping centre, said: "We
appreciate some people will have strong views about the circus, but
we are confident people can watch the show safe in the knowledge that
it exceeds Government regulations on animal welfare.

"We believe the circus has the very best reputation when it comes to
animal welfare and we are assured it has passed numerous RSPCA
checks."

Harrods Fur Protests

Mmost Saturdays at the store from 11am, you can contribute by
attending for an hour or the whole afternoon.
(Tube: Knightsbridge, head for the exit marked Harrods/Brompton Rd).

Harrods remains the last department store in the UK to stock real fur,
5 years after Parliament banned fur farming. Last winter Harrods
stocked a wide range of fur coats, fur trim and fur boots and other
accessories.

Animals used to make fur at Harrods included mink, blue fox, silver
fox, musquash, rabbit, beaver, wolf, coyote, chinchilla and squirrel.

On June 12th the court case involving Harrods, Europe's largest
department store, and three anti-fur activists along with the campaign
group CAFT (Coalition to Abolish to the Fur Trade), was concluded at
High Court in London. This follows 6 months of legal action and four
high court hearings.

Brighton Sealife Demo - Every Sunday at 1pm

Weekly demos against the Sealife's plan to put seals and penguins into
its hellhole.
We can't let this happen, so can anyone in Brighton area come and
support our campaign cos there 's not much time left!

1pm outside the Sealife Centre every Sunday. Stall with petitions and
leaflets - so far the response has been very positive. The next council
meeting is April 16th, so c'mon and make some noise about this cos if
it gets through then it's another setback for animal rights.

The CA have got a FREEPOST address for donations. So if you would like to
donate anything to them please think hard about what it's worth cos heavy
stuff will cost lots of postage.........
Perhaps you would like to send a large envelope full of newspaper, or
anti-cruelty postcards or leaflets
Each mailing will cost the Countryside Alliance cash and keep the local
postie employed.

We have recieved a request for donations or help at this New Forest Animal
Sanctuary.
I have enclosed their details as sent to me........

The New Forest Animal Care Centre was set up to give sanctuary to abused,
abandoned and neglected animals. We have about 70 residents, including
ponies, a bullock and a cow, dogs, ducks, rabbits, wild birds and assorted
others. We never kill healthy animals.
We always need donations and help. We depend on the generosity of people
like you.
Our current fundraising project is for fencing, to replace broken old wire
fences and to mend the fences the bullock has walked through!
New members are most welcome to join for five pounds, and then receive
newsletters, adoption information,etc.
If you would like to support us, please phone 01590 682766(eve) or 07967
643389
We need people who can come regularly(eg weekly or more) to help with animal
care in the mornings, and also people to do some fundraising any time. Any
others offers of help considered too.
We're based in Sway, near Lymington. There's a railway station within
walking distance but buses only come once in a blue moon!
