Dear David Timothy Hamilton,

Thank you for subscribing to the RSPCA's general campaigns update.

1. The welfare of chickens farmed for meat.
2. New law to protect animal welfare.

1. The welfare of chickens farmed for meat

The RSPCA is concerned and alarmed that proposed EU legislation - the first in the history of farming to set standards for the welfare of chickens bred for meat - misses an opportunity for real welfare improvements.

The proposed Directive permits producers, subject to fulfilling some basic criteria, to allocate each chicken in the rearing shed less space than the size of an A4 piece of paper.

What can you do?
The RSPCA will be lobbying in Europe for tougher legislation to protect the welfare of chickens.

2. New law to protect animal welfare

The UK government has announced its intention to introduce the Animal Welfare Bill in this session of parliament. The new bill will reform the Protection of Animals Act 1911, the main piece of legislation that is currently used to prosecute animal cruelty.

If successful the bill would introduce a 'duty of care', which will mean that anyone who owns or is responsible for an animal is legally obliged to look after its welfare.

What can you do?
You can send a letter or e-mail to your MP to ask him or her to support the Animal Welfare Bill. Click on the following link to find out more and send a letter or e-mail to your MP:
