October in Barcelona!

For Grant's fall break this year, we finally got around to visiting Barcelona and—wow!—did we have a good time. The weather was perfect and the city was absolutely beautiful.

Here's a few photos for your enjoyment. Click on one to see it in full-size, and click again to come back to this page.

We went to the waterfront as soon as we arrived. It was packed with people enjoying the sunshine.

Antonio Gaudi was a famous Catalan architect (contrary to popular belief, 'gaudy' was not derived from his name, although it is fitting). This is his apartment building, La Pedrera.

Here's Sooz and Grant standing next to one of the columns of the Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's cathedral. It is also the background of this page.

Barcelona has quite a lot of old- fashioned architecture, too.

We visited the zoo which was a good afternoon. The boys are here lounging against a local tree.

A certain amount of time in the evening was spent in local establishments of public refreshment.

We also visited the Barcelona Pavilion, which is a reconstruction of Mies van der Rohe's famous 1929 building. (Don especially liked it!)

Minimalism isn't everyone's bag, so we went to the Miro museum, too.

The museum held quite a lot of Miro's work, and it was a morning well spent.

We walked up to the Olympic stadium and toured the site.

Such a busy day walking around required us to take nourishment.

I wanted to take a picture of Nicole Kidman, but Sooz stepped in front, looking even cuter!

Gaudi also designed a fantastical park north of the city, the Park Güell.

The views were tremendous on such a clear day.

Gaudi designed a famous salamander fountain at the entrance. (Grant was unharmed!)

Buildings at the park looked like they were designed by Dr. Suess!

Lots of visits to tapas bars and lots of glasses of vino tinto!

Grant and Don took a cable car from the waterfront up to Montjuic, the mountain overlooking the city.

Here's Grant in front of the pavilion on another lovely day.

More public refreshment, including an array of Catalan meats and cheeses.

Here's the Sagrada Familia at night. Every inch is covered with some sort of decoration, wherever you looked you saw something new.

We visited the farmer's market and sampled a wide assortment of fresh Catalan goods.

Sooz and Grant walking hand-in-hand up the Ramblas.

After all that fun, we relaxed in the Iberia lounge before jetting home.
