A Background Briefing from the CWU
On February 6th, 31 union members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) were
sacked by Critchley Labels for "gross misconduct". In fact they had been taking part in a legally
balloted strike over de-recognition of the union by management.
This came against a background of management attempts to de-recognise the CWU over a 2 year
period.
* After co-operating with a voluntary redundancy exercise, in summer, 1994
management declared their intention to de-recognise the CWU. This was
stopped by reaching agreement with Critchley, after a vote for Industrial
action.
* April 1996, Critchley then make 10 workers (including senior branch officers)
compulsorily redundant, breaking a prior consultation agreement.
* October 1996, overtime ban begins over Critchleys actions and refusal to
discuss staffing changes with CWU.
* December 1996, Critchley gives workers 3 weeks notice of derecognition of
CWU.
* Members vote 24 to 4 in favour of industrial action over union recognition.
January 1997, members take part in two one-day strikes. Management
threaten dismissal.
* One week strike commences on February 3rd and sackings threatened on
4th Feb. 31 CWU members subsequently sacked on Thursday 6th February.
Since then the sacked workers have been fighting for reinstatement and union recognition,
maintaining a daily picket in all weathers on an isolated industrial estate in Gwent South Wales.
Support for the pickets have been solid both from local people and CWU members across the
country.
John Monks TUC General Secretary described Critchley as the "worst example of industrial relations in Wales" and David Jenkins, Welsh TUC Secretary, said they would support the strikers to the very end.
Critchley Group also have sites in Nottingham , Stroud and North West London. Financial support
and messages of solidarity are all needed.
The Critchley 31 and the Communication Workers Union ask for your help and support.
