Justice for Jazz Artists
AFM wins Union recognition at New School
December 22, 1998
Dear Friend,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support in our two-year long struggle for union recognition and a fair contract for Jazz instructors at the Mannes College of Music Jazz and Contemporary Program at
the New School. This was one of our initial efforts in the Justice for Jazz Artists campaign and we are happy to report success!
We have signed an agreement with the New School. Jazz instructors will receive a wage increase, and, for the first time, pension payments, health benefits, and job security. Essential to this successful campaign were your
letters, calls, and other expressions of support. We sincerely appreciate your contribution to this successful campaign.
We also wanted to inform you that another group of music teachers at the New School has started a campaign for union recognition. These instructors work in another of the New School's music programs and teach both credit and
non-credit classes in guitar, bass, keyboards, harmonica, and songwriting. We are excited about this new campaign and we expect these instructors will soon join their fellow Jazz instructors as union workers with union wages
and benefits.
Again, thanks for your support of the Justice for Jazz Artists campaign.
Sincerely,
Bill Moriarity
