Memory Lane

Home

The local press is often inundated with letters from Doncaster residents complaining about the growing numbers of new pubs in the town. The following list, kindly provided by Mr. Harry Lambe, shows that there are actually far fewer pubs now than there were in the 1960s.

I have omitted from the original list  pubs which are not within the area covered by this website but you may remember some hostelries which you believe should be included. If you know of any town centre pubs from the 50s and 60s which are not in this list, please email me and I'll update it.

Pubs included in this guide which are still in existence are in blue and are hyper linked . Clicking on the hyperlink will show the pub as it is now, probably with a very different identity! Those pubs which exist and are not included in this guide are in orange.

Any photos or memories of these pubs or corrections would be greatly appreciated. Please email me: donnypubs@btinternet.com

From Mike:

Hows about the TOBY JUG a John Smiths pub that was located on the North
Bridge.
This pub was built about 1960 and demolished a few years ago.
Also built about the same time - a John Smiths pub THE SILVER LINK.
The original cellar pub at the entrance to Bradford Row.

Just for the record my Godfather, Arthur Rodges ex Doncaster Rovers captain
during the 1930's, was landlord thro' the war til 1950's at THE BLACK BOY.
As a kid I can recall circus elephants being wintered in the stables at the
rear of the pub.
Often an trunk  would come over the pub wall and thrash about in the
alleyway that in those days accessed St. Georges Church.
Cheers
