Some
damper hollows occur within the woodland area of Coney Island and contain
species such as Marsh Marigold Caltha palustrus, Yellow Flag Iris pseudacorus, Meadowsweet Filipendula
ulmaria and Woody Nightshade Solanum
dulcamara. In
1992, Large Bittercress Cardamine
amara, was recorded. However this was not found in 2000. Fringes.
In some of the more sheltered sections along the southern half of the
island, Reed Phragmites australis swamp
has developed. These also contain much Indian or Himalayan balsam Impatiens
glandulifera, Hemlock Water Dropwort Oenanthe
crocata and Nettle Urtlca dloica,
together with lower densities of species such as Great Willowherb Epilobium hirsutum and Purple Loosestrife Lythrum salicaria. Other areas. There are several open areas around the island. One extends across the island from east to west including the open area around the house. Along the shoreline this area contains Himalayan Balsam Impatiens glandulifera, Angelica Angelica sylvestris and includes virtually the only extensive areas of flowers on the island. The house clearing and also the open area around the jetties at the southern end of the island are maintained as short areas of amenity grassland.
