Memories of Largymore in 1921

I started Largymore in 1921 at the age of six
and remained there until 1935. It seems as if
were yesterday. Every morning we had to bring
a penny for coal but sometimes it found its way
to the sweet shop.

When the July holidays came I remember being
paraded to collect our apples and oranges.

The loos - if you could call them that - were at the
bottom of the playground and were really only
buckets in the corner.

In the classroom, which was surrounded by hot water pipes, we sat two to a desk - which had two inkwells at the top.

Books were purchased for us by our parents
when they could afford them.

I remember lunch was bread and jam and on our
arrival home from school more bread and jam.

School lasted each day from 9.00am to 3.00pm and
always commenced with scripture.

I remember it as if it were yesterday.
