Advice given to teachers in the 1880's

1. Few
words on the part of the teacher much work on the part of the pupil.
2, Never allow the clever pupils to laugh at the dull.
3. Only move you head to answer a child's question not your whole body.
4. Obedience is easy when it becomes a habit.
5. A noisy teacher makes a noisy class.
6. Desk lessons should be carried out in perfect silence.
7. A tap on the hand is good for bringing silence to the class.
8.Never issue an order more than once.
9. Copying is bad but in arithmetic it is fatal.
10. Never lose too much time over one question.
11. Do not allow a child to look at his toes.
12. Picking little crumbs of bread throughout the day is unseemingly and should
be discouraged.
13. When choosing poetry for poetical recapitulation the teacher should pick
those poems that strongly strike his fancy.
14. Do not write on the slate the number to be carried - this should be held in
the mind.
15. Good teachers will command with their eyes.
16. A wrong answer is better than no answer at all.
