About the ATC

The Air Commodore-in-Chief of the Air Training Corps is His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh, while the Headquarters of the ATC is at RAF College Cranwell, headed by the Commandant Air Cadets, an Air Commodore of the RAF. The Corps is divided into six regions, each commanded by a Regional Commandant.

Each Region is divided into Wings, each commanded by Wing Commander RAFVR(T). There are 38 Wings, each containing a number of Squadrons and Detached Flights. There are approximately 922 Squadrons and about 79 Detached Flights. Listed below are the telephone numbers for the South West Region and its Wings. 614 (Lydney) Squadron is in the Bristol and Gloucester Wing. The Ministry of Defence meets the costs of the official training proramme, while other recommended activities and social events are financed by the Squadron's Civilian Committee. They are responsible for the welfare and recreational side of the squadron's activities.

There are approximately 37,000 cadets in the ATC (and about 9000 in the CCF - RAF Section). There are nearly 10,000 adult volunteer officers and instructors, and about 5000 civilian committee members. This makes the Air Cadet Organisation one of the largest and successful youth organisations in the UK.
