614 (LYDNEY) SQUADRON ATC
How to join the ATC...

How do I join?
Just turn up! We met at the ATC Hut, just by the Whitecross Leisure Centre, in Lydney, in the Forest of Dean.

What time?
On Wednesdays we meet at 6.30pm (until 9.00pm) and on Sundays from 10.00am (until 13.00pm)

What age do I have to be?
You can join at any age between 13 and 18. (Everybody has a short probationary period, just to see if the ATC is for them). Cadets are then usually enrolled from the age of 13¼. The upper age limit for Cadets is 20 years old, although Cadet Warrents Officers can stay on until they 22!

I suppose its mainly for boys....
Not at all! We welcome boys and girls. Until recently, our two most senior NCO's were female. One joined the RAF, while the other is doing her private pilot's licence!

What's an NCO?
A Non-Commissioned Officer. Senior cadets can get promoted to the rank of Corporal, Sergeant, Flight Sergeant, or Cadet Warrant Officer.

Do I have to buy my own uniform?
No! We supply the uniform. Before you are kitted out, you will need a pair of black shoes. You'll also need a pair of army boots!

This all sounds great, but I don't know anybody.
That doesn't matter. You soon will! (We're very friendly!). When you turn up, you will be shown around by one of the cadets. They will tell you all about the ATC and the sort of things we do. You'll then be introduced to the C/O (the Commanding Officer). That's OK, he's pretty friendly, too. He will give you a form for your folks to fill in, and probably show you a video all about the ATC.

It still sounds a bit daunting!
Lots of people bring their Mum or Dad with them. It gives them the chance to meet the C/O (remember him?) and they can get to see the ATC video, too. Generally they'll stay a while, chat to the staff and, if they're really lucky, one of the NCO's will offer them a tea or a coffee.

Anything else I should know?
No, not really. Bring a bit of money with you. We have a canteen half-way through the evening, which sells soft drinks, chocolate, crisps, and stuff.

So, what's next?
Just turn up! We'll be glad to see you.
