| Emma Harrison achieves one of her dreams |
![]() The `Guards 15 year old Emma Harrison was unable to be part of the team that swam Saturday night after a last-minute call up from "Queen of the channel" Alison Streeter to make up part of a relay team in its efforts to conquer the channel. Emma had been part of the Lifeguards team training for their relay swim and was the non-swimming reserve during their recent successful crossing, this was a huge disappointment for her as sea swimming has been one of Emma's passions for some time. When Alison Streeter turned to the club for a sixth swimmer to make up her team ,there was no hesitation from Emma in accepting the challenge. The rest of the team was made up of adults and Emma had to swim 3 times during the crossing ,once in the pitch black of night, showing a great determination and courage. The team went on to complete the crossing in just over 15 hours. |

Development Gala's
|
Dover Lifeguard club hosted the first of the new season's development gala's on Saturday at the towns leisure centre, welcoming clubs from Canterbury, Ashford, Faversham, Folkestone and Gillingham (Black Lion). The Dover team opened the gala with a storming swim in the squadron breaststroke relay touching home in first place only to be disqualified for a faulty takeover. This did not distract the 'Guards from the task in hand and in the next events, Gemma Prosser(36.41)and Alistair Walker(32.84) both swimming the 18/u Backstroke finished in second and first respectively. This was quickly followed by a first place in the 12/u butterfly for Tessa Dunford in a time of 38.22. The points total was added to by two second places by Oliver Latham, in the 10/u backstroke he recorded a time of 46.61 and in the 10/u I.M a time of 1.45.14. After the first quarter of the gala the Dover team were well placed in joint second. As they entered the second quarter of the gala the team was amassing a good points total with first places for Amy Gibbs(12/u Freestyle 34.51), Dan Pott(12/u Freestyle 35.73). There was also second places for Sophie Weymouth(11/u back 43.54), Sam Gibbs(11/u back 44.02, 10/u Fly 45.50), Adam Delo(13/u back 38.42) and with third places from Mel Richardson, Angus Killin and Natasha Hyde the team were in joint first at the halfway point of the gala. The second half of the gala started with a fine swim from Laura Austin who finished in first place in the 18/u freestyle in 31.38 and earnt herself a speeding ticket meaning she cannot swim freestyle again in this series. In the 11/u butterfly Natasha Hyde (41.78) and Dan Pott (43.53) both finished in first place. Supported with a first place by Tessa Dunford in the 12/u breastsroke(45.03). There were also second places for Sam Harrison (10/u Freestyle 40.16) and Sian Steer(13/u Fly 37.63) and also a third place for Katie Latham in the 9/u back. The Dover team were now leading the gala by one point but with only twenty points separating first and last place anyone could win in the last quarter. The Dover team showed a renewed determination going into the final quarter with a first place in the 18/u Breaststroke for Charlotte Hyde in a time of 40.28. In the 12/u backstroke Katie Brown(42.42) and Luke Matcham(39.53) both finished in first place. Megan Curtis recorded a time of 51.39 in the 9/u Butterfly to finish second and with third places from Katie Brown and Evan Waters the 'Guards were leading by two points going into the final four relays. Despite a first place from the 12/u mixed medley team of Luke Matcham, Katie Brown, Tessa Dunford and Joe Bisset the team was pipped to first place and had to settle for a good second place after a superb swim from the whole team. "The team spirit from all of the swimmers was one of the main reasons the team performed so well after the summer break. This will carry them through the next season along with their talent and determination and will produce some stars of the future". "Thanks to all of the parents/volunteers who helped organise and run the gala and made it a huge success and the closest, most exciting, competition in this series to date" |

Six Dover swimmers completed in the Brighton Open Water Pier to Pier swim on the 2nd August 2003. Well done to the Six swimmers. On one of the hottest days of this summer, six Dover swimmers ventured to Brighton to take part in the annual pier to pier sea swim. This year the team travelled together by Mini Bus to Brighton, thanks to Bramley Hedge children's centre, where Sophie Mitchinson & Craig Simmons, both club captains, beat the other 115 strong field to the finish. Craig won the overall race by a clear few meters from his Leatherhead rival Ashley Carter and Sophie won the Ladies race coming in a close 3rd overall. The swimmers pictured from left to right, Sophie, Ashleigh Stevenson, Craig, Naiki Redman, Mark Simmons & Kayleigh Stevenson all completed the approximate 1 mile race within 26 minutes.
