| In the early days following the introduction of the Video Cassette Recorder (VCR) into the United Kingdom, various companies started to issue any film they could get their hands on to an eager public who were quick to embrace this new form of Home Entertainment. A large number of these films were the more violent and over-the-top horror films. Although the companies never crossed the line and distributed hardcore pornography certain minority interest groups did not agree with this freedom. Following pressure to put an end to the fun, the then Government passed the now infamous Video Recording Act (VRA) 1984. From then to the present day, no video (laserdisc or DVD) can be released in the UK without a certificate from the British Board Of Film Classification (BBFC). It is widely felt that the UK has the MOST restrictive censorship of any civilised country. Following the introduction of the VRA a number of films were banned outright. These films acquired the now legendary / infamous title of Video Nasties. This list of Video Nasties was obtained from the English magazine THE DARK SIDE. You may still be able to order a copy of the issue I used from the site; Issue 58. The magazine recently issued a limited run book on this topic called "VIDEO NASTIES". |
