Interaction between Christian and African Traditional Religions

James L. Cox

The articles which comprise this book were delivered initially at a conference held at the University of Zimbabwe 21-24 June 1994 on the theme, 'The Interaction between Christian Religion and African Traditional Religions: Focus on Rites of Passage.' The conference constituted one of the regional conferences co-ordinated by the African Christianity Project of the Centre for the Study of Christianity in the Non-Western World, University of Edinburgh.

This book demonstrates that the academic study of religion is not only responsive to developments in religious life but is interested in actively exploring the symbolic structures expressed in Christian and Traditional ritual activities. Academic 'understanding' thus is shown to be interactive with the many factors which comprise meaning within human societies and religious communities.

The articles comprising the book are written by a number of contributors in three parts, and divided into thirteen chapters. This book appears in the series 'Religion in Contemporary Africa' edited by James L. Cox and Gerrie ter Haar.
