Daniel Oakey

Ever since Darwin, people have been trying to use evolution to pin down human nature and explain morality. But what bearing does the theory that humans evolved really have on how we should understand altruism, justice, friendship and guilt?

Since the 1970s, a consensus has emerged that natural selection, acting at the level of the genes, not only created morality but right from the start corrupted it. This new consensus embraces psychology, game theory and the study of animal behaviour to portray human nature as inherently selfish and human morality as fundamentally self-serving. It is a persuasive attempt to give a robust, scientific account of why moral perspectives exist.

It is also fatally flawed.
