A handbook for teachers
John Holland
The aim of this book is to help teachers and other
staff in schools to gain a greater insight into the difficult and often
taboo subjects of death and bereavement. Through this greater insight,
it is hoped that staff will be better prepared to support bereaved
children and also to help prepare all children for the bereavements
which they will encounter at some point in their lives.
Coping with Bereavement
is divided into three parts. In Part One, death and bereavement
are considered in the context of losses generally and of attachment
bonds in particular.
Part Two of the book
discusses a pro-active approach to help to develop strategies to deal
with and address the issue of death, loss and bereavement in the school
curriculum.
Part Three of the
book considers a re-active approach to help deal with problems arising
after a child has been bereaved. It includes ideas as to how immediate
help can be offered to the child and also offers information on where to
find advice and speedy secondary help.
Finally, the book
addresses the need to develop whole school policies and contingency
plans which should ideally be in place to deal with a sudden and
unexpected bereavement.
"This is an essential resource for any school
considering how it responds to bereavement." "...highly
recommended as a practical, sensitive and authoritative guide to
bereavement." John Logan, Director,
BFSS National RE Centre, Brunel University.
