Practical Theology in a World Context

Edited by Paul Ballard and Pam Couture

This collection of articles draws on the work of Practical Theologians from around the world as they reflect theologically on the tension of living in a world increasingly unified by technology, mobility and mass-culture, but which also recognises regional and cultural diversity, economic and political conflict and a sense of diffuseness and relativism-difference.

This book will be of interest to:

  • practitioners in Practical Theology and colleagues in other theological disciplines,
  • course leaders in Practical Theology for whom it could prove a teaching resource,
  • students in Departments of Theology and seminaries preparing for ministry, lay or ordained, in a pluralistic society,
  • church leaders and others with responsibility for guiding pastoral action and mission in today's world,
  • pastors and others looking for ways of keeping in touch with the rapid developments in the discipline.

Paul Ballard is Head of Department and senior Lecturer in Practical Theology in the Department of Religious and Theological Studies, Cardiff University, Wales. He has edited and written a number of books, including The Foundations of Pastoral Studies and Practical Theology (editor: Cardiff 1986), In and Out of Work: A Pastoral Perspective (Edinburgh 1987) and Practical Theology in Action (with John Pritchard: London 1996).

Pamela Couture is Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology at Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, New York. She has a Ph.D in Practical Theology from the University of Chicago and an M.Div. from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. She has written Blessed are the Poor? Women's Poverty, Family Policy and Practical Theology (Abingdon, 1991), edited Pastoral Care and Social Conflict: Essays in Honour of Charles V. Gerkin (Abingdon, 1995) with Rodney Hunter. She is a consultant to the United Methodist Bishops Initiative on Children and Poverty and is ordained in the United Methodist Church.
