Terence Thomas
Paul Tillich (1886-1965) was known for the whole
of his life as a Christian theologian and philosopher. His main work is
contained in his Systematic Theology, three volumes, 1951-1963.
"I think this thesis on
'Paul Tillich and World Religions' is perhaps the finest on
Tillich I have ever read, and as a book it is superior to easily ninety
per cent of the published material about Tillich."
Robert C. Kimball, Executor Literary Estate of Paul Tillich.
Paul Tillich and World Religions
examines in some detail Tillich's methods in approaching the complex
questions of inter-religious encounter and dialogue. The author offers
an interpretation that takes into account all the evidence and reaches a
conclusion that is at odds with most other interpretations of Tillich's
position at the end of his life. The evidence points to weaknesses in
Tillich's methods but also to a radical shift in Tillich's thinking
brought about by the impact of a serious attempt to understand other
religions, especially Hinduism and Buddhism.
"Thomas sees the deep
continuity in Tillich's thought including that of the last five years
.....It may be the right time to voice the hope for publication in the
near future of Thomas's impressive analysis of Tillich's legacy to
dialogues and encounters." Krister Stendahl,
Bishop in the Church of Sweden, Brandeis University and Professor at
Harvard Divinity School
