Heather Snidle and Paul Ballard
The Social and Pastoral Care Unit, at the
University of Cardiff Department of Religious and Theological Studies,
and its predecessor the Social Work Resource Centre, has been working in
the area of sexuality and spirituality for a some time in a wide variety
of ways and in collaboration with a number of different bodies: notably
the Church in Wales, and Cytun, the Council of Churches for Wales, in
the fields of ministry and conscientization in relation to H.I.V. and
AIDS, sexual abuse and sexuality and spirituality.
From 1989 to 1992 the Church in Wales had a
working group reflecting upon human sexuality under the chairmanship of
Canon Leonard Deas. Many of these papers were originally published as
part of their report in ADVENT the Journal of the Division for Social
Responsibility in the Church of Wales.
Out of these and other pieces of work a common
theme appeared: the relationship between sexuality and spirituality. It
is this theme that is the focus of this book. So a number of papers have
been reassembled without regard to their original relationships and
supplemented from other sources or added to for the occasion. These have
been edited around the new focus yet with the intention of letting them
speak for themselves, allowing different voices and their viewpoints to
be heard.
The various authors come from different church
backgrounds, Anglican, Baptist, Catholic, Methodist and the United
Reformed Church, reflecting the ecumenical nature of the book and of
Social and Pastoral Care Unit.
