Divinities and Ancestors in
Encounter with Christianity in the Religious Experience and History of
the Early Irish and the Akan People of Ghana
Clare Macrae
The primary focus is on the sacral nature of
kingship/rulership equally central for understanding both cultures and
the encounter of each with Christianity. The sources of early Ireland
included a variety of medieval Irish written texts especially those
featuring the pan-celtic divinity Lugh or Lugus in his Irish guise as
paradigmatic king, together with the relevant archaeological evidence,
locally surviving custom and folk-lore etc. The most striking of the
mutually illuminating similarities in this comparative study across the
huge separation in historical context, are the presence of female power
as a basic essential in 'Sacral Rule', (which must not be confused with
'monarchy' in either culture) and the role and cosmic significance of
the 'Great Living Tree' growing at the ritual 'centre' of each kin-based
territorial community.
