Musical Collaboration over the Internet?

Have you ever wished you knew a musician who could add a fiddle part to your latest banjo recording or a guitar accompaniment to your mandoline track? Well, the advent of digital audio recording and the Internet now allows us to have our wishes granted. It is now possible to create multi-track digital recordings by assembling and mixing-down tracks recorded in different locations around the globe. I have done this myself in the past and you can hear the results here. This is how we did it: my old timey musician friends and I in Manchester, UK recorded a track and e-mailed it as an MP3 file to my good friend Clayton in Ohio, US, who plays the dulcimer. Clayton then added a dulcimer track to the recording, mixed-it down, and e-mailed it back to us in Manchester. We then put the finished recording on MP3.com. All you need is a multi-track recording programme and access to the Internet. For more on this, see my digital audio recording web-page.

The advent of digital audio recording, MP3 file compression technology, and the Internet offer some exciting possibilites for creative interaction between musicians around the world, including Celtic and American old time musicians. I don't know how much interest there will be in this kind of collaboration, but to test this out I have set up an online form below that musicians can fill in to indicate their interest in this kind of collaboration. After submitting the contents of the form, this info will be automatically e-mailed to me. I will then add the information submitted to the list lower down this page. Other musicians looking for a particular instrument will then be able to search the list for the instrument they are looking for and contact the musician by e-mail.

If you want to have your name included in the musical collaboration list lower down this page, please fill in the form below and hit the "submit" button. The information will then be automatically e-mailed to me. Although I had the old time country music and Celtic genres in mind when I set this page up, musicians who play other styles/genres of music are very welcome to use it also--please make sure you fill in the "genre" field to indicate the style of music you play.

By the way, I recently discovered a new musical collaboration site which has only just been set up: nowRecording.com You can, sign up as an artist here
