Watch out for
banana skin Altrincham v Darlington
Saturday 8th December 2001, 1pm Darlington know they face a potentially tricky trip to high-flying Unibond League side Altrincham. Alty have plenty of experience - including ex-York player Mark Sertori and the well-travelled striker Steve Finney, with Rod Thornley the one to watch. In the anticipation of an upset, the tie has been brought forward to a 1pm kick off, so Match of the Day can show extended highlights. The Moss Lane floodlights aren't up to TV standards, while their currently less successful neighbours Man United have a home match with West Ham. Certainly, Altrincham have a past FA
Cup pedigree - taking Everton and Spurs to replays in the mid to late
1970s. They also took the scalps of Crewe, Rotherham, Sheffield United,
Scunthorpe (Mr Alcock was still running the line in the Sunday league
that day we presume), York City, as well reaching the Fourth Road after a
2-1 win over Birmingham City at St Andrews in 1986. They've gone beyond
the First Round on 16 occasions.
But there is history with Darlington - the tie will stir some memories
with Darlo fans who remember a visit to Moss Lane 10 years ago in the
Conference-winning season. A repeat of the 1-0 win - David Geddis got
the goal - from Brian Little's era wouldn't go amiss.
Man to watch: Rod Thornley, Top scorer with 20 goals, who could be the only man on view likely to go to the World Cup in June. Brother of ex-Man Utd player Ben, he is also apparently the club masseur at Old Trafford (must have been coating Barthez head to finger-tips in lard lately...) as well as applying the essencial oils to the England side!
Ticket prices: Seats (tickets only - sold out) Terrace: £6.50 (£4.50) - tickets available at the turnstiles only. This is the open terrace on the Hale End. Click here for streetmaps of the Altrincham ground Anything worth adding? Please e-mail us any suggestions

| Things
to do:
Altrincham was always going to be easier to get to than the other potential opponents Lancaster - it's in Cheshire, an old cotton centre and market town, that's now a corridor of the big city really. Not somewhere you really want to spend a long weekend - Manchester on the other hand...
Altrincham is of course only 25 minutes out of the centre of Manchester - which has plenty of choice. But the market town isn't lacking, while the ground in a leafy suburb is within easy walking distance..
The King George is about
150 yards beyond the ground from the town centre, on Moss Lane. The
Bridge Inn also on Moss Lane is between the town centre
and the ground.
The Old Market Tavern, Old Market Place is an old 19th century inn with a large range of real ales, Belgian beers and good food. DAFTS recommended.
