History: Founded in 1950, after a gap of a decade without a club in the town. Started as a Birmingham League club, with a FA Cup third round appearence against Charlton in 1956. Moved to a new ground and Southern League in 1958. Burton also played for a period in the Northern League. Their big change in fortunes and the long climb to the Football League came after ex-Forest and Liverpool striker Nigel Clough took over as manager in 1998 and earned Burton their first championship in the Unibond Premier in 2002. In 2005, the club moved to a new stadium and a highlight was a 0-0 draw with Manchester Utd in the FA Cup 3rd round in 2006. Clough left Albion in January 2009, in what proved an unassailable position at the top of the Blue Square Premier, although it was a slightly nail-biting final day before promotion was confirmed.

From the North: Exit the M1 at Junction 24 and follow the signs for the A50 (Stoke and Uttoxeter). Keep on this road, heading west until you reach the Toyota island and the junction with the A38. Head south on the A38 (Burton and Birmingham) until you reach the first Burton turn off. Take this exit (A5121) and proceed along Derby Road, passing McDonald's and the Pirelli factory on your right and a BP Garage and Cash & Carry on your left until you reach a roundabout. Turn right at this roundabout into Princess Way and the entrance to the ground is 300 yards on your right.

There is parking at the Ryknild industrial estate off Derby Road (£2), take your chance at the ground (£2) or street parking.

The ground is a mile and a half from the station and a 25-30 minute walk As you leave the station turn left, then next right into Derby Street. Keep going on this road for about 1.5miles, straight across the first roundabout by the Derby Turn Pub (on the left), then immediately left at the next roundabout into Princess Way and the entrance to the ground is 300 yards on your right

TRAIN TIMES

Tourist Information Point, Market Place, Burton upon Trent Staffordshire DE14 1HA. There is also a town centre map you can download. The tourism website also has an accommodation list, including chain hotels.

Real ale:

Being a beer town, you won't have to go far for some ale. Although dominated by the big brewery names, there are some smaller breweries thriving in Burton.

The Wetmore Whistle, 93 Wetmore Road, DE14 1SH
What better place to start? A Tynemill pub with Castle Rock beers. Open from 12 noon and not too much of a trek to the ground and walkable from the station. There is also a cafe, which opens for breakfasts from 8am.Click for Streetmap

The Burton Bridge Brewery has its HQ pub at 24 Bridge Street DE14 1S , as well as four other pubs.
The Burton Bridge is a 17th century pub (old name, the Fox & Goose) which is part of the brewery, with two rooms and serves lunches. A range of real ales and CAMRA recommended. Open from 11.30am. Streetmap

The Devonshire Arms, 86 Station Street
Another Burton Bridge pub, a Grade II listed Victorian inn with a small bar and larger lounge. As well as the Burton Bridge beers, there are continental ales and fruit wines. Streetmap

Also recommended are: The Alfred on Derby Street, The Great Northern on Wetmore Road and the The Plough Inn on Ford Street

In the country:

Monsal Head Hotel, Monsal Head, B6465 near Bakewell
If staying over or with time to spare for the Peaks, this pub has some good real ales on and also a great view of the limestone valley and disused railway bridge below. DAFTS recommended..

Alternatively, try Lathkill Hotel, Over Haddon, near Bakewell
For an evening stop - a cosy real ale bar with a real fire, also does good pub food and a restaurant. Another place with a great view over the Dale.

Near the ground:

The Beech Inn, Derby Road, Stretton, DE13 0DL
The closet pub to the ground, about 10 minutes walk away, up the Derby Road (A5121) away from the town centre. Has a beer garden. Was or possibly still is a Marston's pub.

Off Derby Road, there is a Macdonalds, two minutes walk from the Beech Inn pub.

Surfing there...

The Official Burton Albion site is easy to navigate. There is also the unofficial Clough The Magic Dragon which is easy on the eye and has plenty of updated information, as well as the glamorous Brewers Babes sectionor 101 ways to wear a Burton scarf. Perhaps we could do something on DAFTS with strategically placed packets of pork scratchings?

Next away match: Rochdale (Tuesday 13th April, 7.45pm)
