Against the Shakers earlier this season

From North: Leave the M66 at junction 2 and follow signs to "Bury A58, Football Ground" onto the A58 Rochdale Road. After half a mile, turn left at traffic lights by the Crown Hotel (s/p Football Ground) onto Heywood Street.

Gigg Lane

Then turn right at second mini-roundabout (s/p Football Ground, Manchester, Salford B6219) into Wellington Road. At next mini-roundabout turn left into Market St. Carry on over mini-roundabout and right at T-junction after a quarter of a mile into Gigg Lane. Parking is suggested at Holy Cross College on Wellington Road.

There's no BR station at Bury, but you can take the Metrolink tram from Manchester Piccadilly or Victoria stations, the Bury tram run every six minutes with the journey time around 30 minutes and costs £3.50 return. You buy your tickets at machines on the platform. Weekend family tickets cost £5 for a one-day pass for up to two adults, accompanied by one to three children.

The ground is about a mile away from Metrolink Bury - see map. Turn left out of station along a pedestrian walkway underneath the dual carriageway, and towards the town hall. Follow this walkway until it reaches Knowsley St.

There's a newspaper kiosk on the left, opposite the clock tower. Take left and walk downhill along Manchester Road for about half a mile and Gigg Lane is on left hand side, past the Staff of Life pub.

You can also take a No 134, 135, 136 or 137 bus from the Metrolink.

Suggested trains (NO TRAINS ON BOXING DAY!):

Bury is a pleaant enough commuter town on the outskirts of Manchester and the official home of black pudding. It's an easy trip for north west-based DAFTS and Manchester is worth a weekend stay. There's the East Lancashire Steam Railway in the centre of the town, with links to Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall a few miles away. The Tourist Office is in Market Street close to the Metro. Tel: 0161 253 5111. Accommodation - there are Travel Inn and Village hotels in Prestwich, while in Bury itself, The Rostrevor Hotel (0161 764 8266) or Ashbury Guest House (0161 762 9623)

Near ground/real ale

Rose and Crown, 16 Manchester Old Road (pictured)
The Rose and Crown A fairly easy walk from the Metro, in between the town centre and ground and a DAFTS-delight - half a dozen real ales from micro and local breweries (last time including a Phoenix Winter Ale and Bushy's Stout), malt whiskies, the only down-side is there's no food on Saturday's. Open from 12 noon. Off the main Manchester Road, on the junction with Barker Street, down the road from the Jolly Waggoner's. DAFTS recommended. Click for streetmap

Town centre/real ale

Trackside, Bolton Road, next to the East Lancs Railway Station, town centre
Part of the East Lancashire steam railway and close to the town centre. Another real ale alternative, 15-20 minute walk to the ground. A converted waiting room, a little like DAFTS favourite the King And Castle at Kidderminster. This has nine handpumps, including local micros, plus bottled beers and ciders. It also does reasonable food, if the menu is limited. Can be busy on train weekends. It's five minutes walk from the Metro - walk through the bus station towards the shops. Pass a taxi rank and the tourist information office on your right, then take a left into Bolton Street on the left by the Skipton Building Society. The pub is 50 yards on your left, through a pay-and-display car park.DAFTS recommended

The Bluebell, 840 Manchester Road. Large three-roomed pub with ales from Manchester brewery Holt's, on the A56. CAMRA-recommended, but a bit of a hike from the ground though.

Near ground/at stadium

The Staff Of Life 111-113 Manchester Rd, (0161) 764 6246 Up the road from the ground, football-friendly "locals'" pub. Also does accommodation. Click for streetmap, while there's another pub The Packhorse next door.

Bury FC Social Club Gigg Lane Away fans welcome, if room, charge for non-members is £1.

To eat, the ground has decent pies (£2.50) and pasties, Bovril in the serving hatch, which is part of the main stand. Otherwise it's suggested to try the chain takeaways near the station in the town centre, otherwise, stop off at a takeaways along the A56. They include a McDonalds, Antonio's pizza/kebab/chicken or Peppe's Pizzeria. See also black puddings under Things to Do...
