Basement battle

Cambridge United v Darlington

Coca-Cola Division Three

Saturday April 9th 2005, 3pm

A bit of an awkward trip for most DAFTS, bar those in the London area. Cambridge have had a wretched season, as they battle against the drop. This has been set against financial problems and never getting over the loss of striker Dave Kitson to Reading.

Some of DAFTS before last season's game GOING CLOSE: Action during the defeat in December 2003.

They still managed to do the double over us last season - a dull 2-1 win at the Abbey Stadium just before Christmas and then a bizarre 4-3 win at Darlo.

Former Darlo favourite Ashley Nicholls joined them permanently in the Summer after his loan spell, although he was excluded for the encounter the last time we played them.

The odd management duo of Claude Le Roy and Herve Renard have been given Le Grand Heave-Ho, with Steve Thompson given the job of saving the U's. The veteran striker Iwan Roberts has given them a late boost, arriving from Gillingham with Tes Bramble, on loan from Southend, but probably too late.

Off-the-field, there are still money worries, with the Cambridge Supporters' Trust trying to buy back the Abbey Stadium from a sale/lease back deal, and also raising money to strengthen the squad in its battle against the drop.

The Cambridgeshire Police also provide a guide for visiting fans, especially those travelling by coach.

Cambridge, as you'd expect, has plenty of things to see and do, including the ancient college buildings and King's College Chapel. And there are various online guides for finding your bearings before you travel, including the very intensive Ad Hoc Guide to Cambridge which has thought of everything. That includes accommodation.

There's also a decent tourism site run by the local council. Tourist Information Centre, the Old Library, Wheeler Street Cambridge, CB2 3QB, 01223 322640 or for accommodation 01223 457581

The Greyhound, 93 Coldham's Lane Near the park entrance, a footie-friendly pub with food. Light snacks, limited real ales but away-fan friendly. DAFTS recommended. Click for street map

The Live and Let Live 40 Mawson Rd, off Mill Rd. It looks appealing with its old gas lighting and the beer's not bad either! Serves a full range of real ales, ranging from Adnams, Batemans and Everard. Food also with the "dish of the day" around £4.95. An "easy walk from the station" - well nearly. Sup and order a cab, around £5 to the ground. DAFTS recommended. Click for street map

The Cambridge Blue, 85-87 Gwydir Street Popular real ale pub, no-smoking and no mobiles.

Castle, 38 Castle Street Nice old Adnam's pub, dating from the 13th century, yet with plenty of room. A fair few whiskeys behind the bar too! Click for streetmap, while a few doors away there's the Cambridge Curry Centre 45-47 Castle St for a decent Indian.

Meanwhile, in the ground, you're recommended to try the bacon butties (£2.50), which have been brought back to the Abbey Stadium and have won many plaudits over the years. Pukka pies and chocolate are also on offer.

Surfing there...

Not a great deal of choice of websites in the University city. After an improved Rivals' Amber Army.co.uk there's United We Stand, which doesn't seem updated and the One Wonky Antler web presence of the fanzine. Apart from the usual Official website, there is a simple Flash site www.cambridge-football.co.uk which is a bit short of content. A bit like Virtual Quakers, there's a lively Moosenet e-group, which includes prediction league.
