Joey is shirt choice

Virtual Quakers have sponsored new defender Joey Hutchinson's shirt again for the 2005-2006 season.

He follows on from an earlier choice Ashley Nicholls (pictured below), who was another newcomer and went on to win the Supporters' Club young player of the year award.

Ashley became a crowd favourite, growing in influence in midfield under caretaker boss Mick Tait in the run-up to Christmas and he also signed an extended contract. He's also been a popular guest at fans' forums, organised by the Supporters' Trust, and appears a likeable bloke off the park.

The Canadian club

VQs includes some far-flung fans - one is GARY BELLINGER, a Canadian, who follows the trials and tribulations of Darlington FC, exclusively on the internet.

CAUGHT IN THE NET: Gary Bellinger - Darlo grew on me "like a fungus."

Name: Gary Bellinger
Age: 41
Family: Single
Where from originally? Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada - lifelong.
So why Darlington? I started following footy in the UK some 25 years ago, I was able to follow little more than Premier/Division One results but as time went by I was able to follow lower divisions and became attached to a degree with various teams in the top four divisions. Non-league football was only a rumour still then. As I became more sophisticated in who I called my own, this list of teams filtered down to Manchester City at the top, Cardiff City in Wales and little Darlington. I guess there is no certain reason why I got attached to Darlington. I guess it kind of just grew on me, you know, like a fungus!

How often do you get to see Darlington matches? I've yet to see a game in person and as for seeing one - the sooner the better.

How do you follow matches? I follow all the matches courtesy of the VQ e-mail list.
Is it easier since the internet? The advent of the internet was huge. It is 1,000 per cent easier to follow Darlo since the internet made it possible to report results, team info, and keep pace with DAFTS, the Supporters’ Trust, Uncovered.

How difficult did it used to be to follow English football, especially Darlo? Following the lower divisions was very difficult and couldn't usually get much more than basic results. You had to go to greater expense just to follow the former Division One and was pretty well impossible to follow anything farther down the ladder.
