A little
X-tra help

Halifax Town v Darlington

Saturday 3rd November 2001, 3pm

The Shaymen have been suffering under financial constraints, with crowds under 2,000. Neil Redfearn was seen as too expensive to continue as caretaker player-manager - with ex-Southend boss Alan Little taking over.

Aren't those building society adverts bloody annoying? Especially the bald guy in the bottle specs...who would commit themselves to a £60,000 mortgage with that prat?

A fairly poor start to the season means this should be a game Darlo should look for three points from, if we've any ambitions left for automatic promotion. And oh, if you expected some corny headline involving Darlo and "fireworks" or chances "up in smoke?" Forget it.

Shayman to watch:
Craig Midgeley. Ex-Bradford and 'Poolie striker, who even appeared briefly for Darlo.

Ticket prices: Expect £10 (£5) in the North Stand behind the goal.

Staying over:

Calderdale in winter can be a little bleak. Shucks, it's like that in August on the edge of the Pennines. Old textile town Halifax has some famous sons - a bloke who split the atom and George W Bush's ancestors (spooky coincidence..), but also Blue Peter's 70's icon John Noakes, the late wrestler Big Daddy, the even later wartime comic actor Wilfred Pickles and Thatcher's right-hand henchman Bernard Ingham, he of typical Yorkshire gruffness. But as well as some historic old buildings like the stunning 18th century Piece Hall (now galleries, museum and shops), owing a debt to its industrial past, there are some more modern places to go - including the award-winning interactive museum and discovery centre Eureka - (01422 330069) great if you're taking children under 13.

Eat and drink:

Halifax is good for its fish-and-chip shops. That's a statement like saying Rome is good for Catholic churches. The Shaymen Online recommends The Pride of Whitby fish and chip shop opposite The Bass House pub, as well as Offside Snacks opposite The Shay pub.

A good choice of pre-match hostelry - all convenient for the station and the ground:

Shears Inn, Paris Gates, Boys Lane near station.
Small pub which does big meals, ales include Taylors, Landlord and Ram Tam. Click for street map

Another option is the Three Pigeons Ale House 1 Sun Fold, South Parade - Football-friendly Art Deco ale house, nestling between the station and the ground. Six guest beers normally served - this is CAMRA-recommended. DAFTS' Ted Blair writes: "Good selection of real ales (including the more obscure breweries) and great rolls and pork pies. Very friendly management and home/away fans mix well." Check out their website for more details, including food menus - you can even e-mail your orders. Open from 12 noon but normally closed after the game.

The Quays Salterhebble Hill/Huddersfield Road, A629 Large pub on the south of the ground, overlooking the canal. For those staying over, there's also a 31-bedroom Premier Lodge hotel attached (Rooms c£42.50, Tel: 01422 347700).
