| The best of the early US WWII fighters 13,738 P-40's were produced between 1939 and 1944 . Designed as a single seat fighter its poor performance at higher altitudes meant that compared to many of its contemporaries as a fighter it was never more than adequate. At low level however it was very manoeuvreable which combined with its strong construction made it a very successful fighter bomber which flew in all theatres including Europe, Africa, the Pacific and the Russian Front. |

The best of the early US WWII fighters 13,738 P-40's were produced between 1939 and 1944. The P-40N first flew during March 1944 and although by then an obsolete design 5520 were produced to make it the most numerous variant. The P-40N usually called Warhawk by the Americans and Kittyhawk IV by the British was armed with 4 x 0.5" browning mg's with 281 rpg and provision for 2 underwing shackles for 100lb bombs along with the centre line 250/500lb bomb or 52gall drop tank. The number of guns had been decreased from 6 as part of an effort to lighten the airframe to improve the performance but some such as N-1's of the 80th FG carried had had them replaced. Max speed was 378mph at 10500ft. |
