SKYRAIDER CASE

THE SKYRAIDER's

The Skyraider was a Carrierborne/ Land based Attack aircraft whose basic design was reputedly sketched out by Ed Heinemann in a hotel room over night.

It became one of the most versatile aircraft ever built and remained in service from Dec 1945 through the Korean and Vietnam Wars up until about 1976.Its long endurance, ruggedness and low level agility at low speed made it an excellent ground attack aircraft capable of delivering 8000 lbs of stores more accurately than the more modern faster jets that should have replaced them.

It was fitted with a 2700hp Wright Cyclon R-3350-WB engine and had provisions for a 150 gallon centreline fuel tank. Provided with dive brakes it could deliver a wide variety of ordnance in a dive (at 70 o) or use the more conventional low level bombing techniques.

The AD-3’s was equipped with 2 x 20mm wing mounted cannons with 200 rpg and 1 fuselage and up to 14 wing hard points carrying up to 8000 lbs of disposable stores.

Of the 3180 Skyraiders built 713 were AD-6's (redesignated A-1H's in1962) and 307 were AD-4N's, 12 years of Skyraider production at El Segundon finally came to an end on 18/2/57 when the last AD-7 was made.

The A-1H was a refined AD-4B with a strengthened centre section and armour added under and each side of the fuselage below the cockpit to protect the pilot. It was fitted with an 2700hp Wright Cyclon R-3350-WB engine and had provisions for a 300 gallon centerline fuel tank and two150 gallon wing tanks. It retained the dive brakes and could undertake dive (at 70 o ) and low level bombing techniques with a wide variety of ordnance.

The A-1H's were equipped with 4 x 20mm wing mounted cannons with 200 rpg and 1 fuselage and up to 14 wing hard points carrying up to 8000 lbs of disposable stores ranging from dispenser tubes for small cluster bomb units (CBU's) to rockets, mini guns, firebombs (napalm) and individual bombs as big as 2000lbs

Recovered by Aero Retro in 1985 it was shipped to L'Havre for Amicale Jean Baptiste Salis/Jean Francois Perrin & Partners (F-AZED) until 1991 when it became part of The Fighter Collection's (TFC's) collection of Historic aircraft. based at the IWM's Duxford Airfield (G-RAID) where it is frequently displayed.

The AD-4N was a 3 seat night attack derivative of the AD-4 with extra equipment including a radar pod under the port wing primarily for detecting submarines.

100 of these were redesignated as AD4-NA's after having the extra equipment removed and replaced with 2 additional 20mm cannons for use in the Day attack role in the Korean war. In Sept 1962 the surviving AD4-NA's were again redesignated this time as A-1D's.

The AD-4NA's were equipped with 4 x 20mm wing mounted cannons with 343 rpg and 1 fuselage and 14 wing hard points capable of carrying up to 8000 lbs of disposable stores (bombs/rockets).
