T-28 CASE

THE T-28's

The T-28 is a remarkable aircraft which although having become obsolete in the training role for which it was designed went on to become a successful light attack/counter insurgency aircraft totally against the normal military trend of retiring obsolete/tired front line types to training roles!!

The T-28S Fennec was Intended for counter insurgency use in the Algerian and other French Colonial conflicts of the early 60's about 245 of the 1,986 USAF T28A's built were thought to have been converted to T-28S Fennec standards by Pac-Aero and Sud-Aviation.

The extensive modifications required the replacement of the T28A trainer's Wright 800 hp engines with one of 1425 hp and the addition of French instrumentation, armour, 4x0.5" MG's in 2 wing pods plus additional wing racks for external stores (up to 4x297lb bombs or 6x2.75"rockets).

The modifications were so successful that they not only transformed the trainer into a front line light attack/COIN aircraft ideally suited to the minor wars and conflicts of the time but led to similar American modifications of the T28A to produce the T28D which saw combat in Vietnam and other South East Asia conflicts.
