Francis White's History, Gazetteer, and Directory, of Norfolk 1854, pp. 563-564

UPTON, a village and parish, 9 miles W.N.W. of Yarmouth, contains 116 houses, 564 souls, and 2,111a. 3r. 29p. of land, including Fishley, which is united with it for the support of the poor. John Waters, Esq., is lord of the manor, and the principal land owner. In the 13th of Edward I. Sir Guy de Botetourt obtained the grant of a market and fair to be held here. The Church, dedicated to St. Margaret, had a tower, which has long been in ruins. The vicarage, valued in the King's book at £5, is consolidated with that of Ranworth, in the patronage of the Bishop of Norwich, and incumbency of the Rev. J. W. Greaves. The Bishop of Norwich is appropriator of the great tithes, commuted in 1839 for £283 15s. 6d. and leased to John Waters, Esq. The vicarial tithes were commuted for £163.
