Ecclesmachan and Threemiletown Community Council

Purpose.
Community councils have a legal right to exist, their main duties being:

Determine the views of the community on local issues and express these to the council and other public bodies.
Safeguard and promote the best interests of the area.
Arrange action within the community.

West Lothian Council is keen to share its decision-making powers with local people and values the role community councils have to play in this process. Regular consultation takes place with community councils on a wide range of issues including, planning applications, local plans, decentralisation and community planning.

Area Covered and Size.
West Lothian Council has drawn up a scheme such that every area in the district is covered by a community council. West Lothian is currently divided up into 42 community councils, each with an approved size of 8, 12 or 18 members, depending on the population covered. (A community council can only be formed if at least half the number of people required to make up that council are nominated). The Ecclesmachan and Threemiletown Community Council has an approved size of 8 elected members.
In the 2009 Community Council elections 8 members were nominated and elected.

Meetings.
Meetings of the Ecclesmachan and Threemiletown Community Council are held in the Ecclesmachan village hall. These will normally take place at 7pm on the first Wednesday of each month for the period September 2010 to May 2011 (no meeting in January 2011). These meetings are held in public. However, the council may exclude the public from a meeting when discussing any particular item where it feels publicity would be against the interests of the community due to the confidential nature of that business. The AGM for 2010 was held in the village hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday 5th May 2010, the last meeting held until re-commencement on the 1st September 2010.

Scheduled meetings are set for the following dates:
2010: 1st September, 6th October, 3rd November, 1st December
2011: 2nd February, 2nd March, 6th April, 4th May (AGM)
