NEW DISTRICT CHAIR
(21-May-2007)

The Representative Synod, meeting at Windermere, was pleased to accept the recommendation of the nominations committee that the Rev Richard J Teal be commended to the Conference for designation as chair of the Cumbria District from September 2008. Richard and his wife Sue will come to us from the Beverley Circuit in the York and Hull District. In his current appointment as superintendent of the Beverley Circuit Richard has served as minister of Toll Gavel United Church (Methodist/URC). In this capacity he has had a distinct public role in the life of the town and the area. Richard’s wise leadership has helped this church to develop from a rather fragile beginning into a vibrant Christian community with a growing membership. Toll Gavel has grown from 180 to 300 members with a particular increase in young families and children.

He will bring to this appointment a breadth of experience having served in South West Tyneside and Berwick upon Tweed in the Newcastle district before taking up his present appointment in the York and Hull district. Richard is committed to the enabling of lay ministry and the importance of worship and pastoral care in the building up of the church. He is not afraid to give a clear lead where this seems right but always sees ministry as something done alongside and with others. Richard believes himself called to this District at this time.

Richard will shadow David Emison at Connexional meetings during the year 2007/8 and take up residence and full duties in our district on September 1st 2008. Please pray for Richard, Susan and their family as they prepare for this change of direction.

Richard Hall
