'MICHAEL
CHAPMAN'

Michael Chapman returns
to The King's
Head
Nearly a decade ago now, when live
professional music started up at the King's Head, the first
professional 'name' act was the highly acclaimed
singer-songwriter-guitarist Michael Chapman.
Michael started a trend that
continues to the present day, of quality musicians
performing in an intimate, relaxed atmosphere, in the heart
of Allendale, for some of the best and most discerning
audiences in the region.
The songs of Michael Chapman are
timeless gems of received wisdom, with titles like 'Falling
from Grace', 'All Day, All Night', and even 'Postcards of
Scarborough'. His acoustic guitar work ranges from the
merely superlative to the sublime, and his voice is a
perfect foil for the music, as the lyrics echo the sentiment
of the blues chords.
Kicking off the first live musical
show in Allendale of the new year, the gig promises to be a
delicious sampling of the past delights with a serious ear
to the future. Michael Chapman is 'Still Making Rain' and
his large audience are certainly in for a real treat
tonight

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
8:00 pm
followed by our
traditional
MUSIC NIGHT at The King's
Head
A lovely, intimate
seasonal evening around the fire -- who could ask for
anything more in a tranquil, rural setting, with a pint of
the best bitter anywhere on earth, and friends entertaining
the night away. It's sheer bliss, man . . . who says heaven
isn't here all around us?
[Some salient notes about
our AGM and Annual Report that may be interesting:
We put on 63 separate shows
in 1999, entertaining some 3623 people, roughly divided
between The King's Head (1850) and other public venues like
Allendale's Village Hall (1310). We estimate that our
promotions efforts have contributed some £16,000 pounds
into the local economy, which is a cause for some delight.
We are still in the black, financially, and looking ahead to
a particularly brilliant year when some amazing musical
entertainment is anticipated. The organisers wanted to make
a special point of thanking all who participated in NMN's
musical events over the past year, and to encourage this
audience to provide useful criticism and support for the
next shows in 2000.

THRICE
BREWED
Locally, they
don't come much better than this brilliant folky band, who
regularly top the lineup over at Carlisle's Folk & Blues
Club. They've got just about all the traditional instruments
covered, their sound is superb, and this looks like an
idyllic evening in the company of musicians who love their
music, and enjoy playing for an appreciative audience who
love it too.

SESSION NIGHT!
We're embarking on a new plan for
the 4th Friday of each month throughout this winter quarter,
with a special view to giving the hard-working volunteer bar
staff a bit of a break for one weekend of the month. By
popular demand we're following up on the popular
instrumental workshops Folkworks has helped initiate in our
local middle school, and laying on a profesional tutor for
an hour's tutelage prior to the session proper. We'll be
expecting to be overrun with aspiring musicians old and
young, but we'd hate to alienate the singers who make our
regular music nights so great -- so we're ensuring that
everybody gets a chance to participate by adding in a song
spot for when the instrumentalists need a break!
Just which instrument will be
featured, in our professionally -led workshop before the
session, is yet to be determined, but we're working on it.
This looks like a great opportunity to engage with the
rigours of timing and tune structure, and then let it all
hang loose and play with the best of them. When the players
need a bit of a break, we'll probably let some songs slip
through, if any singists show up.
