Friday 7th July, King's Head
Lots of people regard Ry
Cooder as the most supremely accessible acoustic guitar
sound of the century. And lots of people love good
acoustic blues.
So the arrival in
Allendale on Friday July 7th of a real roots wizard from
North America's west coast, with a sound like that of a
blue Ry Cooder, along with an accompanist we've grown to
know and love, Mr. Jim Condie, is a real treat.
Tim Williams has been in
constant demand by blues and roots festivals stateside ever
since he settled in Vancouver in 1970. He's appeared with
all the blues greats, from BB King, John Hammond, George
'Harmonica Smith, Honeyboy Edwards, Big Walter Horton,
Lightnin' Hopkins, Taj Mahal -- the list goes on and on.
Add in comics Steve Martin, jazz musicians Larry Coryell,
and even bluegrass superstars like Earl Scruggs, and you get
some idea of the breadth of his talent and audience.
Reviews across the
western states and prairies are revealing too: "an
easy-going, seemingly effortless country blues style";
"covering the Mississippi Sheikhs, Tampa Red, Blind Blake,
Robert Johnson and WIllie McTell takes a lot of nerve but
Tim Williams pulls it off; "all the gifts of a Ry Cooder and
a dash of bluesy grit". I've been listening to his latest
CD, 'Indigo Incidents', and it is certainly the real thing.
His vocal style is easy and simple, straight from the heart
and unaffected, while his guitar feels like it's ever so
gently ripping my heart out.
Entertaining on guitar,
slide guitar, mandolin and six-string banjo, in a delightful
acoustic pair of sets with the well-honed guitar
accompaniment skills of Jim Condie, this duo looks like a
brilliant night of down-home raw acoustic blues at any
price.
