Bobby Valentino &

LOS PISTOLEROS

ALLENDALE VILLAGE HALL

With B.J. Cole on pedal steel guitar, Martin Belmont on six string bass, Kevin Foster on lead guitar and Bobby Irwin on drums, this has got to be the highlight of the summer.

Possibly the most enthusiastic crowd over the last years at The King's Head has demanded again and again that we get this rare group back, so we've importuned, telephoned, begged and borrowed and cajoled, and finally got a return engagement!

Since they appeared here, both Bobby, violinist and vocal charmer extraordinaire, and B.J.Cole, the UK's best pedal steel guitarist, have appeared on telly. Bobby backed Bewitched in 'C'est la vie' on Top of the Pops, and B.J. was a featured accompanist on Jules Holland's REM special. So we really are delighted to get these top professionals back in Allendale! The other band members are well known to us from Hank Wangford's stable, including big Martin Belmont on lead and six-string bass guitar, cute Kevin Foster on bass, and the unique and original Bobby Irwin on drums.

God knows when the band are going to get a CD together -- they've been threatening one for years, but it's possible they'll bring one along to Allendale, as they're playing at Glastonbury just before this gig. As the man said, why go down south for muddy hamburger sound when you can get pure intimate beefsteak at home?

If you missed out on this band last time, then there's no excuse really to deprive yourself on this occasion. They combine the best elements of Country music -- Tex-Mex, R&B, Swing, Cajun, Rock-a-Billy, and just a little wry sentimentality -- to make an evening when the whole floor will be heaving with dancing bodies, as the music infects each and everyone.

We'll push the tables to the side if we have to, to clear the floor when the spirit descends, and we'll just get on down to it. On a hot summer's night, it sounds like just the ticket for fun!

Cappy's Drift

Saturday, July 17th

The King's Head, Allendale

Two Northumbrian pipers : Ray Sloan who is Tynedale's official piper and a superb maker of small and Uillean pipes; Andrew Lawrenson, coming up to his third year at university; as well as Paul Bloomfield, a brilliant guitarist, vocalist and music educator; and our own fiddler and luthier extraordinaire (Andy Morgan of the Windy Mills Ceilidh Band) combine to make a unique band with the quintessential flavour of Northumberland.

We're sending our very own band down to Scapoli, Italy on July 22nd for their International Festival of the Bagpipe, home of the Museum of the Zampogna, and that's a fact.

So before the lads play in front of an audience of thousands, we thought it might be a good idea to send them off with our audience of hundreds or so. If you care about live cheerful popular music in Allendale, you really ought to come out and support the band, who are heroically doing their bit to promote the North Pennines.

Tickets only £3.00, but there will be a raffle!

What we said about the show here at The King's Head

and there are lots of pictures of the band, and full biographical sketch, as well as a history of how they came into being, at the Cappy's Drift home page.

In addition, if you'd like to go directly to the set of snaps of the lively 23rd International Festival of the Bagpipe, featuring Cappy's Drift, then be our guest! They're lovely, and it looks like a great time was had by all, and why not?

Northumbrian Music Night

Friday July 23rd

The King's Head, Allendale

Heart of the summer, music for all!

Tickets only £1.00 or 50p concessions, and all entertainers are welcome.

It was a very sweet night, with 2 Scottish pipers, 2 Northumbrian pipers, tin whistle and guitar, 2 guys with guitars, flute and clog dancing, solo male and female voices, an Appalachian dulcimer, and our own Terry Conway closing out the evening with 'Allendale Town'. You never know how good it will be until it's been.

I

MOSE SCARLETT with Jim Condie

Saturday, July 24th

On his 'For A Few Dollars Mose' tour, Mr. Scarlett is an enchanting Canadian crooner singing the hits of the 20s, 30s, and 40s in a velvet voice that would crack ice at 50 paces. A great favourite returns to the King's Head, and thrills the ladies once again.

Tickets only £4.00

ADRIAN BYRON BURNS

The King's Head

Friday July 30th

Tickets only £4.00

We were very lucky to get Adrian up to Allendale from Leicester to fill a slot at the end of the month that we've been working on for several weeks. The man does 200 gigs a year!

We're going to be saying a lot about this entertainer, in the next few weeks, but this is just a quick preview. Henry Ayrton called his CD 'Out of the Wood' one of the 10 best of '98, and his voice, style, phrasing, material and blues guitar riffs are his own. If we said he sounds to us like a Tom Waits without the act, that might give you a little feeling for his music. This is blues, R&B, jazz and a touch of rock that will thrill to the very soul.
