Principal Families of Ulnes Walton

The family of Ulf de Waltons were the 'big' family in this area during the Twelth & Thirteenth centuries.

Recorded as being in the area in c.1160, Ulf de Walton had two sons, Adam and Warin. Warin in turn had a son (confusingly named Adam as well, but also known as Master Adam). Master Adam inherited manors in Ulnes Walton, Leyland and Eccleston, and also at Hoole, where he eventually settled (c.1294). •4

The land of Ulnes Walton transferred 'ownership' a few times after the Waltons. Once it was owned by Henry, Earl of Lancaster (who then exchanged it for Barley in Yorkshire - the cheeky sod) and by 1558 Ulnes Walton was under the 'ownership' of the mighty local Farrington Family.

Also to complecate matters somewhat, another local family (the Suttons) also claimed some ownership of the area. At a 'Pleading' in 1333, Thomas de Sutton states that his Great-Grandfather Robert de Sutton married Agnes, daughter of 'Dolphin de Walton'. •4

Around 1660, the principal residents in the area were the Stopfords and the Gradwells. By 1790 the principal landowners were now Farrington and John Marsh, and by 1800 Thomas Gardner and Edmund N.Kershaw can be added to that list.

Taken from 'Feudal Baronary' inquest in 1212, and further supplemented by information from 1242-3, in refering to the Leyland Hundered, it mentions that the Walton estate paid one fifth of a Knights Fee to the Barony of Pemwortham.
