There are currently 5 versions of PS2 available across the UK (Oct 2002). Basically at certain points over time Sony redesigned the structure of the PS2. From the outside they all appear the same at first glance but inside they can be very different. Every time they do this new mod chip diagrams have to be worked out and in some cases new chips have to be designed and manufactured.

With some chips you need to make sure you get the right chip for the right version, therefore you will need to follow the steps below to establish which version of PS2 you have before you order any of our mod chips:

Generally version 3 machines will not be stocked by any high street stores anymore as these were the original version launch console for when the PS2 was first introduced in the UK, however some stores may carry old stock and even sell you a version 3 today. So to establish if you have a version 3 or not, flip the PS2 onto its back and count the number of screw on its underside.

The yellow rings above have been placed over each screw - the machine to the left, having ten screws, is a version 3. The machine to the right, having eight screws, could be either a version 4, version 5 or version 6 console.

As you might have guessed version 4 machines were the next to be released. The easiest way to establish if you have one of these is to take the expansion bay cover out of the back and look at it:

If your expansion bay cover has metal in it, like the one at the top then its a version 4. If its made entirely of plastic, like the one on the bottom, then its either a version 5 or a version 6.

There is actually very little difference between a version 5 and a version 6. The only difference that we're aware of is that one of the ribbon cables inside the PS2 is upside down. Therefore the only way to tell is to open up your machine and take it apart and then when you get to the main board look at the picture below:

In practice there is actually no need to know any longer if yours is a version 5 or version 6 as all mod chips that work with a version 5 will also work with a version 6 even including the PnP No-Solder mods which at one time we're version 5 or version 6 specific. They are now a 'dual' chip so will work with either version.

Probably the easiest one to work out - basically if you have a model no 39003 then you have a v 7.
