The
Parish name of Slaugham is pronounced "Slaffam". Ham is a
Sussex term meaning Manor or House. Sloh, a slough: Slogu, dross,
slag (iron) or possibly Slaga, a slayer or hunter which suggests
to us that the first habitation was the homestead of the hunter, by
the side of the great lake below the Church. This may be the
derivation of the name. List of spellings: 1284 Slagham, 1349
Shalgham, 1412 Slawgham, 1460 Slawham, 1542 Slowgham, 1588 Slaham.
Registers
of 1620 give the present spelling. Further history can be found on
the Manor
page.
