Lych Gate

The Lych Gate

The Lych Gate was erected in 1903. The inscription reads:
"Remember ye in the Lord, Wilfred Hans Loder, to whose memory his widow dedicates this gate".

There are also three Latin words.
Amavimus, Amamus, Amabimus

    We have loved.
    We do love.
    We shall love.

For many years the inn, the Old White Horse, adjoined the Lych Gate, but in 1922 it was pulled down and the fine view of the church was exposed. The inn derived a great deal of its income from stabling of the many horses which had brought people to church.

The Yew Trees

Horsfield, writing in 1935, says:

"just outside the Covert Chapel is a venerable Yew tree, which must shaded many generations of Coverts as they passed from mansion to Parish Church. It's circumference at a foot from the ground is 24ft 7in."

In 1975 it measured 25ft 2in and is estimated to be over 600 years old.

A second Yew tree was planted on 31st March 1800.

Churchyard

The Churchyard has been the resting-place of many generations of the people of Slaugham Parish, much further back than records go. The oldest tombstone known is inscribed thus:-

HEARE IS BVRED THE BODY OF THOMAS NORVD . DE SESED THE 14 DAY OF M ARCH ANO 1615
The inscription on a stone near the Covert Chapel door read:- 1745 aged 136 years Muse not on me for as I am, so must you be
