Alpha Course

To help people understand more about the Christian Faith,
the church has organised many Alpha Courses.
These courses enable people to ask questions,
express doubts and fears,
talk over difficult concepts
and generally find out more about Christianity and its meaning.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the Christian Faith.

Learning and laughing. It is possible to learn and have fun at the same time.

People meeting together. An opportunity to make new friends.

Helping one another. Discuss difficult questions of life and Christianity.

Ask anything. No question is too hard or hostile to handle.

Alpha Testimony

Another Testimony.

I grew up an atheist. My family were atheists; my training and profession as a scientist made it easy. I found discussion about religion with Christians, pointless - we could never get anywhere except by agreeing to differ. That didn't leave much to discuss.
If I had to be scrupulously honest, I would have to say that I was an agnostic. I could see no reason why God should exist, and therefore assumed that he didn't. I couldn't prove it any more than Christians could prove to me that He did.
After my wife became a Christian I was forced to re-examine my beliefs. I really didn't want to let 'religion' drive a wedge between us. After she had taken part in the first Alpha course, members of the church family were invited to bring a guest to the second one, and I was it! But I came to Alpha with a more open mind than would have been the case a year or two earlier.
I knew many of the church family already, and was among friends. A warm welcome, with coffee or tea and cakes, always put everyone in a relaxed frame of mind. A good session of songs and hymns (ancient and modern) set aside the cares of the day. I do enjoy singing. The main part of the evening was a talk and a discussion. The different speakers brought very different personal experiences and outlooks, so the talks were often very stimulating and challenging.
The discussion afterwards - the best part of the evening for me centred on the talk, but often developed to other topics. This was good for me; I felt the themes in the course concentrated on the believer who didn't practice Christianity - and I hadn't got that far yet! With the same group of people, soon good friends, in my discussion group each week, I felt able to explore my doubts.
Experienced and knowledgeable Christians some of them were, and able to answer the questions that needed answers, and to help me recognise those questions I needed to answer myself.
I felt very disappointed when the course finished, so I did it again and so did all the rest of our group! That discussion group is still together, with a few additions from the second time round, and now meets regularly as one of the church's home groups. I'm still learning, still moving forward on that long journey. Progress is slow, but rewarding, and the company's out of this world!

There will always be a warm and friendly welcome to anyone who wishes to share
in either an Alpha Course or come along to one of our services.
