The Vowel Machine The Vowel Machine will help you to recognise English vowel sounds. You will see words in ordinary spelling or in phonetic transcription. Your task is to choose the word you hear.  
Transcriber Transcriber is a program which presents words in sound or in spelling or both. Your task is to type in a phonetic transcription of the words.  
TONI TONI is a program designed to help you recognise the nuclear tones of English.
PLATO PLATO is a program where you have to find the nuclear syllable in sentences which you hear.
Vgrid Vgrid gives you practice at using the vowel quadrilateral

Some of the programs on this site will only operate correctly with Internet Explorer (version 4 or later). Some also need the phonetic font Ipa-sams Uclphon1 SILSophiaL to be installed on your computer. You can obtain this, and other phonetic fonts, at

If you do not have this font, the phonetic transcriptions will appear as ordinary characters. For details see section "How to input your transcription" on the Transcriber help page.
