Primary Cardinal Vowels

RP Monophthongs

Vgrid is a program written in JavaScript for Microsoft Internet Explorer 4+ and Netscape 4+. It needs a reasonably up-to-date-computer with sound output.

The aim of the program is to provide practice in the use of the vowel quadrilateral (also known as the cardinal vowel diagram). You can hear a vowel sound by clicking on the "New vowel button". Vowels are chosen at random, so you may hear the same one twice or more in succession. If you wish to hear the same vowel again, click the "Repeat" button.

Your task is then to locate the vowel on the vowel quadrilateral. You can do this in one of two ways: (1) type in the row letter and column number by referring to the superimposed grid, or (2) click in the appropriate square of the grid and then check that the correct co-ordinates have appeared in the input boxes. You should also indicate whether the vowel has lip rounding or not by clicking the appropriate radio button. Notice that the default choice is unrounded.

When you are satisfied that your choice is correct, click the "Click to see answer" button. The correct coordinates and lip position will be displayed at the bottom left of the screen, together with the appropriate phonetic symbol for the vowel. Your answers will also receive feedback: "right", "close" or "wrong" for the grid co-ordinates and "right" or "wrong" for lip position. You can also get a report on your performance at any time by clicking the "Report" button.

To start Vgrid, choose one of the vowel sets at the left of this screen. To return to this screen, click the "Home" button.
