Abrasive Pre-Polishing Kit Instructions
What is Abrasive
Compound
Abrasive compound is a glue/grit mix it is ideal removing deep
marks, scratches and to provide a satin finish on a work piece. It
is commonly used prior to finishing with mops and compounds. The
Abrasive compound method will allow you to take metals which are in
a very poor condition and through several processes you will be left
with a semi-bright surface ready to be finished with mops &
compounds.
Abrasive compound can be applied to any type of mop (except sisal)
and to felt bobs of any shape and size. When using greaseless
compound you do should run at speed of around 1200-1500 rpm.
Grades Available
There are several grades of abrasive compound available. The lower
the grit number the coarser the abrasive (faster metal removal but
poorer finish). The higher the grit number the finer the abrasive
(slow metal removal but better finish). To take metal from a poor
condition to a condition that is ready to be polished will take
several greaseless compound processes; for example you can start
with a wheel coated with 150 grit greaseless compound. Your next
process would be with a mop coated with 180 grit greaseless compound
and after that the wheel coated with 240 grit greaseless compound.
Process 1- coloured stitch mop with coarse (80 grit) abrasive
compound.
Process 2- coloured stitch mop with medium (150 grit) abrasive
compound.
Process 3- coloured stitch mop with fine (300 grit) abrasive
compound.
Important
Abrasive compound will dry when in contact with air, please keep
product sealed in air tight container.
Please read these instructions as abrasive compound is applied and
used differently from standard wax based polish.
Remove all grease and dirt, it will only clog and dampen the
abrasive compound making it less effective.
Mop Preparation
-
Before you can use greaseless compound you must
first prepare a mop/felt. If you are using a drill we recommend
it be mounted on a vice, it will make coating the mops much
easier.
-
Attach mop to adapter and make sure it is screwed
on tightly.
-
Peel back the plastic wrapper from the greaseless
compound.
-
Apply the exposed compound to the running mop as
it is slowing down, (the mop takes up the abrasive quite slowly.
Switch m/c on then switch off & apply abrasive to mop until the
mop stops). This will need to be repeated several times to coat
the mop.
-
Leave mop running for a few minutes, this will
help the coat to dry quicker.
-
Repeat c & d until a thick coat is on the mop.
-
Remove the mop after allowing several minutes for compound to
dry. The mop is now ready for use.
When using a selection of wheels with same or different grits it
is often wise to prepare all your wheels in advance. It is also
good practice to mark your wheels with the abrasive grade, as
there is very little difference visually between the different
grits.
Mop Use
The following will give you a guide to
using the mops after they have been prepared (see mop preparation).
Starting with a coarse coated wheel (80 grit), then a medium (150
grit) and finish with a fine (300 grit) coated wheel. The greaseless
compound kit contains those grades.
-
Make sure you have the appropriate safety
equipment i.e. dust mask and safety specs.
-
Surface to worked on must be free of dirt &
grease.
-
Attach the 80 grit wheel to the taper, make sure
it is tightly fixed & start motor.
-
Apply wheel to work piece. If it is possible move
across scratches to be removed. Make sure all scratches are
removed, if you do not remove all scratches properly then you
may find it difficult to remove them later as they will become
more visible when the surface finish improves.
Remove 80 grit wheel when you are satisfied.
-
Attach the 150 grit wheel to the taper, make sure
it is tightly fixed & start motor.
-
Apply wheel to work piece. If possible move wheel
in the opposite direction to the scratch pattern left by the
last process.
-
You should remove all the scratch pattern left by
the previous operation. The metal should look slightly brighter.
-
Remove 150 grit wheel when you are satisfied.
-
Attach the 300 grit wheel to the taper, make sure
it is tightly fixed & start motor.
-
Apply wheel to work piece. If possible move wheel
in the opposite direction to the scratch pattern left by the
last process
-
You should remove all the scratch pattern left by
the previous operation. The metal should look slightly
brighter.
-
You may be happy with a 300 grit finish or you
may wish to polish the metal with mops & compounds for a
superior finish.
Tips
-
Use a different mop for each grade of abrasive
compound. Do not mix different grits on the same mop.
-
If you are polishing small articles then you can
fix your drill into a vice, this will enable you to polish these
small articles with ease.
-
Remember abrasive compound can be coated on a
variety of shapes and sizes felts and mops. In industry abrasive
compound is renowned for its flexibility.
-
When you have finished try one of our Polishing
Kits or that extra special finish.
Safety
Always use safety equipment: Dust mask, safety spectacles and gloves
should be worn.
Always apply the item being finished to the area of the mop which is
rotating away from yourself. |
