Abrasives Guide
Pre-Polishing (Abrasives)
The coarsest mop &
compounds combination will only remove light scratches & marks. For
the removal of deep marks & scratches you will need to use
abrasives.
Abrasives are available in many different forms.
Flap Wheels
Consists of cloth-backed aluminium oxide (grit) flaps radially
fitted around a central core. The abrasive mop adapts excellently to
the shape of the workpiece and provides an even surface finish
throughout its service life. Two types available, shaft mounted for
use on a drill or pneumatic & larger wheel with wood centre for use
on a polishing lathe or grinder with a taper spindle Available in a
large range of grits. Flap wheels are a very flexible product which
are used on all metals, plastics & woods.
Belts
Abrasive coated on cloth/paper. Available in a wide range of sizes.
There are different types of belts available for use on metals (hard
& soft), woods & plastics.
Wheel Cement + Grit
A traditional method, requires you to coat a polishing mop (usually
a cloth stitch mop) or a felt bob with wheel cement then a coat of
abrasive grit is added to the cement coating the mop/bob. The
felt/bob is then left to dry overnight and is then ready to use. Any
size mop/bob can be coated with a wide range of grits allowing great
flexibility with this product. Used for all metals.
Greaseless Compound
Another traditional method, requires you to coat a polishing mop
(all types can be coated except sisals) or felt bobs with greaseless
compound. Greaseless compound is a glue and grit mix which is melted
onto the mop/bob and left to dry for a few hours. An extremely
flexible product which is easy to use, small felt bobs can even be
coated. Commonly used for lighter applications then the wheel cement
as the bond of the glue is not as strong.
