Alloy Wheel Polishing Kit Instructions

Step by step guide to using your polishing kit

Preparation

The item to be polished should be clean and free from oil and grease.

If the surface of the item is heavily scratched, marked or scored then suitable abrasives should be used before polishing.

If the surface of the work piece is lacquered this must be removed before polishing. Use an automotive paint remover and please remember to use appropriate safety gear.

Which Mop Do I Use?

In general, the 3” x 1” white mop should be used on large, east to reach areas. The 3” x ½” white mop should be used for difficult to reach areas. The goblet mop should be used for internal diameters and the polishing felt for awkward areas such as in between spokes.

Using Your Polishing Kit

  1. For safety reasons we recommend that when attaching the arbour to a drill and when you change the mops, you do so with the power supply to your drill turned off.

  2. Attach arbour to drill

  3. Screw required mop or felt tightly onto the arbour.

  4. Run the drill and apply pink compound to the mop/felt for about 2 seconds. As the compound is wax based the heat generated by friction melts the compound onto the mop/felt.

  5. With the drill running apply the mop/felt to the wheel using a medium/hard pressure. For best results it is recommended that you constantly vary the directions in which you polish, trying to polish across scratches and marks rather than along them.

  6. If required, apply more compound to the mop BUT do not apply too much.  If black grease marks appear on your wheel you have too much compound on the mop. These marks can be removed with a little Vienna Lime powder on a clean cloth. The key here is little and often.

  7. Use the 3” x 1” white mop for the easy to reach areas and the 3” x 1/2“ white mop for the more difficult areas. The felt is used for nooks and crannies and the goblet mop for internal diameters.

  8. When you have finished rub over the finished wheel with a little Vienna lime on a soft cloth to remove any remaining marks.

Safety

Always use safety equipment- Dust mask, safety spectacles and gloves should be worn.

Always apply the item being finished to the area of the mop which is rotating away from yourself.
