What is Porting?

The inlet and exhaust passages in the cylinder head of an engine are known as ‘ports’. Porting an engine is achieved by smoothing out and polishing the ports to facilitate the more efficient flow of the induction and exhaust gases.

How does this improve performance?

An engines performance is dependant upon the volume of air it draws in on the induction stroke, how well it mixes this air with the fuel, how well it burns it and how well it exhausts the spent gases. The more air the better the performance. With air (gases), velocities through the ports at approximately 300 ft/sec, any rough surfaces will have a considerable slowing down effect. This applies equally to the exhaust. If these gases are slow in reaching the cylinder then the fresh charge is slow in entering. Turbulence, or movement of the air during combustion is also desirable in a well running engine. Polishing the combustion chamber not only helps this but in addition assists in preventing any build-up of carbon deposits.

Can anybody do it?

Yes, if you have the skill to carry out a cylinder head overhaul and decoke. If so, you should have no trouble with porting. All that is required is an electric drill and the necessary porting tools for smoothing and polishing the airways. These are supplied with this kit.

Why is Porting not done in manufacture?

Porting is an operation that is essentially a manual operation and does not therefore lend itself to mass production methods. Subsequently very little (if any) machining is carried out during the manufacturing process.

Instructions:

A step by step guide to using your porting kit

  1. Clean off any carbon deposits before porting (use the wire brush supplied).

  2. Use the grinding stones to smooth out and blend the steps in the ports. Take care to follow the contour of the ports and ensure that you remove all the roughness to leave a smooth service. Important! DO NOT ALTER THE CONTOURS OF THE AIR PASSAGES

  3. Using the coarse cartridge rolls, lightly clean up the ports and combustion chambers, then go over them again using the fine cartridge rolls and flap wheel (for chamber).

  4. Repeat step 3 again using the felt cones with the polish supplied to leave the ports with a smooth polished surface.

  5. When you are satisfied with the finish (remember, a fine, smooth, even polish is all that is required), thoroughly wash the head and grind in the valves. (Don’t forget to clean and polish the area under the valve heads).

Tips

  1. To reduce ‘pick-up’ and ‘dragging’ when using the grinding wheels and cartridge rolls on aluminium alloys use a little white spirit as a lubricant.

  2. To achieve a finer finish with the cartridge rolls use a little light oil, this will reduce the cut and produce a finer finish. The use of a flexible shaft for porting will make this operation much easier .

Safety

Always use safety equipment: Dust mask, safety glasses and gloves should be worn.
